Diamond Class

Homework Expectations in Year 6

Children in Diamond Class are given a homework diary at the start of the academic year.

They are also given a Reading Record Diary, in which they keep a log of reading activity at home. All children are expected to read at night a minimum of 3 times per week. Reading Record Diaries are checked by the class teacher once a fortnight.

In year 6 the children are encouraged to be more independent in their recording, although endorsements and comments from parents and carers are appreciated and encouraged.

All children are given weekly spelling words to learn for their homework and are tested on them weekly.

Times tables learning and practice is another regular expectation. The class teachers will specify which table is to be practised currently and children are given the opportunity to work towards achievement certificates in school.

As well as all of the above, in year 6 the children are given 3 specific weekly tasks to complete. These include reinforcement work in Maths and English, as well as topic / science work, including research.

Holiday homework may be set for the Christmas and Easter breaks. This could well be linked to forthcoming topic work, or it may be reinforcement of that term’s learning. Teachers may also ask children to complete a task during the longer summer break, in preparation for their new classes.
